Now in our 20th year, it’s hard to imagine that El Mundo got its start as a “little burrito shack” serving customers off of paper plates. Built over the years from humble beginnings, El Mundo has become a wildly popular and respected independent Louisville restaurant.
Our atmosphere is cozy and fun, in a casual and colorful environment. On the first floor is our open kitchen and order-at-the-counter dining room. Head upstairs if you are interested in table service, which is offered at lunch and again at 5pm for dinner. Upstairs you’ll also find our seven-stool bar where very curious movies make the rotation on our tv. One of the city’s liveliest outdoor patios is hidden in the backyard, open from Spring to Fall with full table service after 5pm. Due to our small, intimate size, we are unable to accommodate private parties, large parties, or accept reservations.
Our food is a made-from-scratch take on Mexican and Mexican-American classics, influenced by time spent in Mexico, California, Seattle, and Denver by founding partner Bea Chamberlain. A few of our most popular dishes include Grilled Fish Tacos with chipotle aioli, Mole Poblano Enchiladas with ground Kentucky Bison, Carnitas with pasture-raised pork, and Mango-Chipotle Glazed Wild-Caught Shrimp Fajitas served al mojo de ajo. Vegetarians will find more options here than are typically available at a Mexican joint--our beans, rice, and sauces are all vegan without sacrificing flavor. The other half of the culinary duo, co-owner Mike Boyle, keeps the variety rolling with weekly specials, including dishes like Crab and Shrimp Enchiladas with a creamy roasted poblano pepper sauce, Beef Heart Tacos with ancho chile-grilled onion salsa, and Chiles en Nogada with walnuts and pomegranate.
